Invade Rage (now with 100% more tagging meme)

This is the stuff of my childhood dreams; to program a Rage playlist. Rage is having an ‘invade rage‘ competition over at their site, so get on over and enter your preferences. I’ll post my entry here so you can lambast me for my taste in music.

New Order – Touched By The Hand of God
Monaco – What Do You Want From Me?
REM – Orange Crush
Ramones – Pet Semetary
The Cult – She Sells Sanctuary
Gary Numan – Cars
The Church – Under The Milky Way
Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven
Buzzcocks – Ever Fallen In Love?
Killing Joke – Love Like Blood
XTC – Dear God
Johnny Cash – Hurt
Radiohead – No Surprises
Electric Six – Radio Ga Ga
Queens of The Stone Age – Go With The Flow
Rollins Band – Liar
Probot (with Lemmy) – Shake Your Blood
Rammstein – Amerika
Judas Priest – Touch of Evil
Black Sabbath – Paranoid

Okay, you also have to give the reasons that at least five of these songs are important to you… So here goes my attempt at justification…

Monaco – What Do You Want From Me?

A song from a drastically underplayed album, with drastically underplayed clips, especially on Australian radio and TV. What on Earth were people thinking?!?

The Cult – She Sells Sanctuary

Ahhh! The hair! The bandanas! The make-up! That lipstick! Big red lips that will make any heterosexual man… feel… strangely… attracted…

What gender is Ian Astbury? Awww…

The Church – Under The Milky Way

I’ve got the album. I’ve played it over and over. To this day, I still can’t fathom the friggin raw egg. Nineteen years is too long to go without an answer…

The… Egg… Must… Be… Explained..!

Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven

What’s a Rage playlist without the Pixies? Back in 2001, someone sent me a video clip with this song dubbed over a clip of a monkey drinking his own pee.

Ahhh, classy.

Killing Joke – Love Like Blood

I still can’t get sick of this song. It’s like it dates but doesn’t get old; a piece of the 80s that I don’t have to call a guilty pleasure.

XTC – Dear God

It’s only through the persistence of Rage that I have come to love this song. After years of waiting for an hour of metal at 3am in the morning, having to sit through Dear God, over and over, do I actually appreciate the song as the excellent piece of art that it is.

Now if Rage played the (exclusively heavy metal ridden) playlists I sent them (with petitions) as a teen in ‘89 and ‘90, I’d be deprived of this education.

Thanks Rage. Both Australia and I thank you for resisting my youthful folly. Now if only you could have done something about my mullet sooner, in addition to introducing me to XTC.

Electric Six – Radio Ga Ga

I don’t get the controversy about this song. Roger Taylor didn’t like it, okay, Brian May is supposed to have liked it. Queen fans thought it was dancing on Freddie’s grave and Dick Valentine didn’t even want it on the album in the first place.

It’s a good song, with a fun film clip. Relax for crying out loud!

Besides, it has poodles.

Rollins Band – Liar

My favourite Rollins Band song. Henry sings this song like he means it so much, yet it’s so comical and the sadism is so absurd. You just have to see him in his Superman costume for crying out loud.

It’s so over the top, yet credible. Sort of like Vincent Price without the ham.

Rammstein – Amerika

One day when I graduate, I’ll be a high school teacher. If Rage plays my list, someone, somewhere can record this to prove (through the magical, wonderful tactic of bullshit) that I’m indoctrinating their kid in anti-Americanism. ;-)

To be honest, I just like the sound of their accents and the production values of the film clip. There, that’ll get ASIO off my trail.

Update: Okay, I’m making this a tagging meme. Those tagged should enter the competition, post their submission on their blog and then tag 5 other aussie bloggers. I tag; Mikey, Arthur, Jeremy, Miss Politics and Romana.

Update II: Okay, seeing that “GoAwayPlease” thinks a Rage meme is a good idea; I hearby nominate “GoAwayPlease” with a supplementary tag.

Fabulous! I did a post on programming Rage about 2 years ago
(since deleted due to my minimalist fetish)
and Lefty said at the time it would make a good meme – NOBODY took us up on it.

Oh well, someone’s done it now!

Bruce–I’ll get around to this meme as soon as I have a moment or two to spare.

That R-A-A-A-G-E signature shreik was recorded by Deni Gordon who came to Sydney from the US in 1968 to be in HAIR The Tribal Love Rock-Musical.
A lovely woman. Deni Hines is named for her.

RAGE has to be more about the VIDEO than the music surely … so my immediate picks are for Video reasons.
Straight off the top of my head I have to say for My meaningful Five:

    1. Long Way To The Top AC/DC because it was so cheap and effective (it craps all over many mega-buck clips);
    2. Mike Naismith’s first-of-the-video-clips RIO because it was first;
    3. Dave Lee Roth’s California Girls because it’s the best ever non-pretentious video;
    4. Ultravox Vienna because it’s the best Pretentious one,
    5. Birthday Party Nick The Stripper because it was filmed in Hawthorn tip at 3am and I was there.

Nice. Timelady prodded me, so I have thrown a list together over at http://www.pcuse.com/rage-list-thing.php Two highlights were reminding timelady of a song she missed and listening to some old favourites :)

    thanks for the fun
